The Jersey Edible Plant Seed bank

Curated by HYPHA consulting in collaboration with jersey Heritage

The Jersey Royal Potato has become the Island’s dominant crop. For centuries, however, Islanders have relied on local seeds for both food and health, and many traditional seed varieties continue to be cultivated and consumed to this day. The Jersey Edible Plant Seed Bank aims to showcase the radically biodiverse range of edible and medicinal seeds growing in the Island. In a climate where biodiversity is critical to our survival, this exhibit invites you to be inspired by local edible diversity and to help you start to build a new relation with nature through food. Over the course of two years, more than 400 seed varieties are being collected with the help of community groups and growers to maintain the knowledge of seeds for generations to come. It captures the human story involved with the choices we make as to what we eat and why. From medicinal edible perennials, to hundreds of varieties of tomatoes and peppers, seed diversity and sovereignty is a key part of Jersey’s food security. Seeds are looked after by the community and shared through networks for free. At the end of the exhibition, these seeds will go to Grow Community Farm to be planted.

Each of our seed pots is unique and handcrafted by local artists:

1-50 Winter: Evangeline Yates, La Louême

51-100 Spring: Shelley Godden, Land and Moon

101-150 Summer: Lindsay Rutter

151-200 Autumn: Andrew Sinclair, Sinclair Ceramics
